Enchant diamond equipment before upgrading
You can start building your ideal enchantment combinations while using diamond equipment. Upgrading eligible items to netherite preserves their enchantments, so there is no need to wait until you have collected enough ancient debris.
Plan before using an anvil
Repeated anvil work increases future costs and can eventually prevent further combinations in survival. Decide which enchantments you want before applying your books, especially for equipment with several enchantments.
Best Armour Enchantments
For general survival, we recommend Protection IV, Unbreaking III and Mending on all four armour pieces.
Add the enchantments specific to each slot to improve underwater exploration, sneaking and movement. Thorns is an optional addition, particularly if you sometimes need to handle mobs without hurting them.
Helmet
| Recommended Enchantment | Level |
|---|---|
| Protection | IV |
| Respiration | III |
| Aqua Affinity | I |
| Unbreaking | III |
| Mending | I |
Optional: Thorns III.
Respiration gives you more time underwater, while Aqua Affinity removes the usual underwater mining penalty. Both are useful for ocean exploration and underwater building.
This combination also works on a turtle shell.
Chestplate
| Recommended Enchantment | Level |
|---|---|
| Protection | IV |
| Unbreaking | III |
| Mending | I |
Optional: Thorns III.
A chestplate needs relatively few enchantments for a dependable survival setup. Protection helps reduce damage, while Unbreaking and Mending keep it in good condition.
Keep one ready for dangerous adventures, even if you usually wear an elytra.
Leggings
| Recommended Enchantment | Level |
|---|---|
| Protection | IV |
| Swift Sneak | III |
| Unbreaking | III |
| Mending | I |
Optional: Thorns III.
Swift Sneak increases your movement speed while sneaking. It is a useful upgrade for careful building and exploring the Deep Dark.
Remember that Swift Sneak belongs on leggings, rather than boots.
Boots
| Recommended Enchantment | Level |
|---|---|
| Protection | IV |
| Feather Falling | IV |
| Depth Strider | III |
| Unbreaking | III |
| Mending | I |
Optional: Soul Speed III, Thorns III.
Alternative: Replace Depth Strider III with Frost Walker II.
Feather Falling is one of our first priorities for survival equipment. It reduces fall damage, making it especially useful when building roofs, towers and anything else far above the ground.
Depth Strider improves underwater movement. Frost Walker offers a different benefit by freezing suitable water beneath your feet, but the two cannot normally be combined.
Soul Speed is useful for travelling over soul sand and soul soil. Feather Falling reduces damage rather than guaranteeing survival, so keep watching your step.
Best Tool Enchantments
For tools you regularly use, start with Efficiency V, Unbreaking III and Mending.
Your next decision is usually Fortune or Silk Touch. Fortune improves certain drops, while Silk Touch collects eligible blocks intact.
Pickaxe
| Recommended Enchantment | Level |
|---|---|
| Efficiency | V |
| Fortune | III |
| Unbreaking | III |
| Mending | I |
Alternative: Replace Fortune III with Silk Touch I.
Fortune is our recommendation for collecting resources from suitable ores. Silk Touch is useful when you want the ore blocks themselves or other eligible blocks intact.
Ideally, keep one Fortune pickaxe and one Silk Touch pickaxe. Having both gives you more control over what you bring home.
Axe
| Recommended Enchantment | Level |
|---|---|
| Efficiency | V |
| Unbreaking | III |
| Mending | I |
Optional: Silk Touch I, Sharpness V.
Efficiency makes gathering wood quicker, while Unbreaking and Mending help your axe last through larger projects.
Silk Touch adds flexibility when collecting suitable blocks. Sharpness is worth considering if your axe also serves as a weapon.
Fortune is another possible choice, but it does not increase the number of logs dropped.
Shovel
| Recommended Enchantment | Level |
|---|---|
| Efficiency | V |
| Silk Touch | I |
| Unbreaking | III |
| Mending | I |
Alternative: Replace Silk Touch I with Fortune III.
Silk Touch is our preferred choice for landscaping because it lets you collect blocks such as grass blocks intact.
A separate Fortune III shovel is useful when you want flint from gravel. Keep it away from your gravel gathering projects unless flint is the result you want.
Hoe
| Recommended Enchantment | Level |
|---|---|
| Efficiency | V |
| Fortune | III |
| Unbreaking | III |
| Mending | I |
Alternative: Replace Fortune III with Silk Touch I.
Fortune improves drops from suitable crops and plants, while Efficiency helps clear blocks that hoes break effectively.
A Silk Touch hoe is a useful second tool for collecting eligible blocks. Fortune does not improve every harvest, so its benefit depends on what you break.
Best Weapon Enchantments
Our recommendations favour everyday survival. Specialist weapons can use different combinations depending on the enemies you expect to face.
Sword
| Recommended Enchantment | Level |
|---|---|
| Sharpness | V |
| Looting | III |
| Sweeping Edge | III |
| Unbreaking | III |
| Mending | I |
Optional: Fire Aspect II, Knockback II.
Alternative: Replace Sharpness V with Smite V for undead enemies.
Sharpness is a versatile damage upgrade, while Looting improves eligible mob drops. Sweeping Edge increases sweeping attack damage in Java Edition.
Fire Aspect and Knockback come down to preference. They can help in combat, but some players prefer keeping enemies nearby and avoiding fire.
Spear
| Recommended Enchantment | Level |
|---|---|
| Sharpness | V |
| Looting | III |
| Unbreaking | III |
| Mending | I |
Optional: Lunge III, Fire Aspect II, Knockback II.
Alternative: Replace Sharpness V with Smite V for undead enemies.
Spears can receive sword enchantments except Sweeping Edge. Their exclusive Lunge enchantment propels you forward during a jab attack.
Choose Lunge if you enjoy the extra movement, and remember that using it consumes hunger and durability.
Bow
| Recommended Enchantment | Level |
|---|---|
| Power | V |
| Unbreaking | III |
| Infinity | I |
Optional: Flame I, Punch II.
Alternative: Replace Infinity I with Mending I.
Power increases arrow damage. Infinity is convenient for ordinary arrows, although you still need to carry one.
Choose Mending instead if you would rather maintain the bow using experience and carry your ammunition. Infinity does not provide unlimited tipped or spectral arrows.
Crossbow
| Recommended Enchantment | Level |
|---|---|
| Quick Charge | III |
| Piercing | IV |
| Unbreaking | III |
| Mending | I |
Alternative: Replace Piercing IV with Multishot I.
Quick Charge reduces loading time, making the crossbow more comfortable to use during combat.
Piercing lets arrows pass through multiple targets. Multishot fires three projectiles in a spread instead. Choose whichever suits your preferred fighting style.
Trident for Throwing
| Recommended Enchantment | Level |
|---|---|
| Impaling | V |
| Loyalty | III |
| Unbreaking | III |
| Mending | I |
Optional: Channeling I.
Loyalty returns your trident after throwing it. Channeling adds the ability to summon lightning when the required thunderstorm and target conditions are met.
In standard Java Edition, Impaling increases damage against aquatic mobs rather than every enemy standing in water.
Trident for Travelling
| Recommended Enchantment | Level |
|---|---|
| Riptide | III |
| Impaling | V |
| Unbreaking | III |
| Mending | I |
Riptide launches you with your trident when used in water or rain.
Keep this as a separate trident from your throwing setup, because Riptide cannot normally be combined with Loyalty or Channeling.
Mace
| Recommended Enchantment | Level |
|---|---|
| Density | V |
| Unbreaking | III |
| Mending | I |
Optional: Wind Burst III, Fire Aspect II.
Alternative: Replace Density V with Breach IV for fighting armoured targets.
Density improves the damage gained from falling before a smash attack. Wind Burst launches you upwards after a successful smash, giving you an opportunity to attempt another.
Breach reduces the effectiveness of a target’s armour. It cannot normally share a mace with Density.
Best Utility Item Enchantments
Elytra
| Recommended Enchantment | Level |
|---|---|
| Unbreaking | III |
| Mending | I |
Both enchantments are worth prioritising if you regularly fly. Check your remaining durability before leaving for a long journey.
Shield
| Recommended Enchantment | Level |
|---|---|
| Unbreaking | III |
| Mending | I |
A shield has a simple recommended setup. These enchantments help it last longer and allow repairs using experience.
Fishing Rod
| Recommended Enchantment | Level |
|---|---|
| Luck of the Sea | III |
| Lure | III |
| Unbreaking | III |
| Mending | I |
Luck of the Sea improves your chances of treasure, while Lure reduces the wait for a bite.
Remember that treasure fishing also requires suitable open water conditions.
Shears
| Recommended Enchantment | Level |
|---|---|
| Efficiency | V |
| Unbreaking | III |
| Mending | I |
Efficiency helps with suitable block cutting tasks. Unbreaking and Mending are useful if you regularly gather wool, leaves or other materials with shears.
Other Utility Items
| Item | Recommended Enchantments |
|---|---|
| Brush | Unbreaking III, Mending I |
| Flint and steel | Unbreaking III, Mending I |
| Carrot on a stick | Unbreaking III, Mending I |
| Warped fungus on a stick | Unbreaking III, Mending I |
These items have fewer enchantment choices, but durability upgrades are useful when you use them regularly.
Incompatible Enchantments
Some enchantments cannot normally appear together on the same item. Check these combinations before buying books or using an anvil.
| Enchantments | What to Remember |
|---|---|
| Fortune and Silk Touch | Choose one per tool |
| Sharpness, Smite and Bane of Arthropods | Choose one damage type |
| Protection, Fire Protection, Blast Protection and Projectile Protection | Choose one protection type per armour piece |
| Depth Strider and Frost Walker | Choose one per pair of boots |
| Infinity and Mending | Choose one per bow |
| Piercing and Multishot | Choose one per crossbow |
| Riptide and Loyalty | Use separate tridents |
| Riptide and Channeling | Use separate tridents |
| Density, Breach, Smite and Bane of Arthropods | Choose one per mace |
Feather Falling can be combined with Protection. Loyalty and Channeling can also share a trident.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is the Best Minecraft Enchantment?
Mending is one of the most useful choices for equipment you want to keep, because it allows repairs using experience.
The best enchantment for a particular job varies. Fortune is valuable for gathering suitable resources, Efficiency saves time, and Protection helps during everyday survival.
Should I Choose Fortune or Silk Touch?
Choose Fortune when you want increased eligible drops. Choose Silk Touch when you want eligible blocks intact.
For pickaxes, owning one of each is our recommendation.
Should I Put Thorns on All My Armour?
Thorns is optional. It damages attackers, which can be useful in combat, but inconvenient when handling mobs you want to keep alive.
Consider leaving it off equipment used for mob transport and similar projects.
Does Fortune Give More Wood?
No. Fortune does not increase the number of logs dropped when chopping trees.
For gathering wood, prioritise Efficiency, Unbreaking and Mending.
Does Netherite Keep Diamond Enchantments?
Yes. Upgrading eligible diamond equipment to netherite preserves its enchantments.
You can enchant your diamond equipment first and upgrade it later.
Does Every Enchantment Come from an Enchanting Table?
No. Some enchantments require other sources. Mending, Swift Sneak, Soul Speed and Wind Burst are examples you will need to obtain elsewhere.
