Minecraft Villager Jobs & Trading Guide

A librarian with the book you need, a farmer with golden carrots and a fletcher who seems unusually enthusiastic about sticks. Minecraft villagers can turn a small settlement into a useful part of your survival routine.

The tricky part is understanding why a villager has chosen the wrong job, refuses to restock or keeps the same trades after you remove a workstation.

This Minecraft villager jobs and trading guide covers the 13 professions, their workstations and the habits that make trading easier. It uses standard Java survival trading without the optional Villager Trade Rebalance experiment.

The three rules to remember

Give an eligible adult villager access to the correct unclaimed workstation. Check its offers before making a trade. Once you trade with it, its profession and existing offers are locked, and it still needs a matching workstation to restock.

Every Villager Job and Workstation

A villager’s profession is linked to a job site block, usually called a workstation. These are the 13 standard professions and the blocks they use.

Unemployed villagers and nitwits are not extra trading professions. Baby villagers cannot take a job, and nitwits do not become traders when you place a workstation nearby.

Decorative blocks can become workstations

Barrels, brewing stands and other useful blocks can attract unemployed villagers. If your intended librarian keeps becoming a fisherman, check whether a nearby barrel has been claimed.

How to Give a Villager a Job

  1. Find an adult unemployed villager that is not a nitwit.
  2. Choose the workstation for the profession you want.
  3. Place an unclaimed workstation where the villager can reach it.
  4. Give it time to claim the block while awake, preferably during its daytime work period.
  5. Check the profession and open the trading menu to inspect the available offers.

Nearby villagers can compete for the same block. Work with one villager at a time when setting up a trading area, and confirm which villager actually claimed the workstation.

A workstation placed beside a villager is not necessarily linked to that villager. If the wrong one claims it, simplify the surrounding setup before adding more blocks.

Changing Jobs and Locking Trades

Before the First Trade

An untraded villager can lose its profession when its claimed workstation is removed. Once it becomes unemployed, it can claim a suitable workstation again.

For a librarian, this means you can inspect its first offers, remove its lectern if you do not want them and let it claim a lectern again. The next offers are random, so there is no guarantee the book you want will appear quickly.

Make changes while the villager is awake and able to update its job. If nothing happens, check the claimed block, access and time of day before repeatedly placing more workstations.

After the First Trade

Completing any trade locks the villager’s profession and existing offers. It does not have to be the enchanted book or item you are trying to keep.

Breaking its workstation afterwards will not reset those offers. Give it a matching workstation again so it can work and restock. Levelling up can add new offers alongside the existing ones.

Check before you click

If you are choosing a librarian for a particular book, inspect the enchantment, level and price before making your first trade. Buying or selling something else first also locks that villager.

Villager Trading Levels

Trading gives a villager experience. Filling its trading experience bar unlocks the next career level and additional offers.

LevelCareer StageBadge Material
1NoviceStone
2ApprenticeIron
3JourneymanGold
4ExpertEmerald
5MasterDiamond

Later offers are not all visible when you first inspect a novice villager. Some useful equipment and supplies only become available after you have traded enough to unlock higher levels.

Not every villager of a profession offers every possible item. Check the actual menu rather than assuming another villager’s offers will be identical.

Useful Villager Trades

The best villagers depend on what you produce and what you want to buy. Start with a few useful traders rather than building a huge trading area before you know what you need.

Librarians and Enchanted Books

With standard Java trading, librarians can offer books such as Mending, Unbreaking and Efficiency. A particular book is not guaranteed, and not every enchantment is available from villagers.

Soul Speed, Swift Sneak and Wind Burst are examples you need to obtain through other mechanics. The optional Villager Trade Rebalance experiment changes librarian rules, so tutorials based on that experiment may differ from a standard survival world.

Once you have chosen your books, use our best Minecraft enchantments guide to plan the equipment they belong on.

A note for current Java versions: master librarians no longer sell name tags. That trade moved to the wandering trader in Java 26.1, so older librarian guides may send you looking in the wrong place.

Emeralds from Supplies You Already Have

Crop trades and stick trades are popular because their ingredients are straightforward to gather. A cleric buying rotten flesh or a mason buying suitable stone materials may fit your play style better.

Compare the materials you can spare with the offers available. A convenient trade for one player may be awkward for another.

Prices can change with demand, reputation and discounts. Buying the same offer repeatedly can increase its price, so do not treat a screenshot price as a permanent promise.

How Villager Restocking Works

Each trade has a limited stock. Once you use it enough times, it becomes temporarily unavailable, usually shown by a red cross in the trading interface.

Villagers can restock up to twice per Minecraft day when they work at their claimed workstation. That does not mean a restock will happen immediately when you place a block.

  • Keep the correct workstation in place.
  • Make sure the villager can actually work at its claimed block.
  • Allow time during its daytime work schedule.
  • Remember that it may already have used its restocks for that day.
  • Stay nearby so the area remains active while you troubleshoot.

In Java Edition, a bed is not required specifically for trade restocking. Beds remain relevant to other village mechanics, including breeding; they are not a replacement for a working workstation.

Building a Reliable Trading Area

A trading area is easier to manage when every villager has a clear workstation, a safe space and a label describing the useful offers.

Design ChoicePractical Benefit
Add villagers and workstations graduallyMakes it easier to identify who claimed each block
Keep workstation access clearSupports reliable working and restocking
Light and secure the areaReduces the chance of hostile mobs reaching villagers
Label useful offersSaves opening every menu to find one book
Leave room to move and organise suppliesMakes everyday trading less fiddly

Do not assume a workstation is safe to remove just because a trade has been locked. The offers remain, but the villager still needs a suitable block to replenish them.

On TogetherCraft, get permission before moving another player’s villagers or changing their workstations. A helpful looking lectern may be an important part of someone else’s setup.

Common Trading Problems

ProblemWhat to Check
The villager will not take a jobIs it an adult unemployed villager, rather than a baby or nitwit?
It keeps choosing the wrong professionCheck for other reachable workstations, including decorative barrels
Removing the block does not reset its offersHas anyone already completed a trade with it?
A useful offer has a red crossCheck workstation access, work time and remaining daily restocks
The workstation appears linked incorrectlyAnother nearby villager may have claimed it
An older guide promises a missing itemCheck the Java version and whether the guide uses experimental trading

Change one thing at a time when diagnosing a problem. Removing every workstation at once can make the links much harder to untangle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Many Villager Jobs Are There in Minecraft?

There are 13 standard trading professions. Unemployed villagers and nitwits are separate states rather than additional trading jobs.

Can I Change a Villager’s Job After Trading?

No. Once a trade has been completed, that villager keeps its profession and existing offers. Removing its workstation does not reset them.

Why Will My Villager Not Become a Librarian?

Check that it is an adult unemployed villager, not a nitwit or an already traded villager. It needs an available lectern it can reach, and another villager may have claimed the one you placed.

How Often Do Villagers Restock?

Up to twice per Minecraft day when they work at their claimed workstation. They cannot keep restocking endlessly, and blocked or missing workstation access can prevent it.

Do Villagers Need Beds to Restock in Java Edition?

No. Java trade restocking depends on working at the claimed workstation, rather than a bed. Bed requirements differ for other village mechanics and between editions.

Can Every Librarian Sell Mending?

Under standard trading, Mending is in the possible librarian book pool, but an individual librarian is not guaranteed to offer it. The optional Villager Trade Rebalance experiment uses different rules.

Can Nitwits Get a Profession?

No. Nitwits do not take a trading profession when you place a workstation. Babies must grow up before an eligible villager can take a job.

Does Breaking a Lectern Remove Locked Trades?

No. A librarian you have already traded with keeps its profession and offers. It still needs a suitable lectern to work and restock.
