You have mined enough deepslate to build a small kingdom, your inventory is full and you are starting to wonder whether diamonds are avoiding you personally.
Knowing where Minecraft ores generate can make a mining trip much more productive. The best place to find diamonds is different from the best place to gather coal, and heading to the bottom of the world is not the answer to every resource shortage.
This ore generation guide focuses on practical mining levels for standard Java survival, with diamond hunting advice and useful targets for the other main ores.
Looking for diamonds? Start here
For focused diamond mining, around Y=−59 is a practical starting level. Bring an iron pickaxe or better, light your route and check for lava before breaking ore. Fortune III improves your diamond drops; it does not make new ore generate.

Best Y Level to Find Diamonds
Y=−59 is a useful level for a dedicated diamond tunnel. Diamond generation generally becomes more favourable deeper underground, but the bedrock at the very bottom replaces blocks you could otherwise mine.
That makes a level just above the bedrock layers a practical compromise. It is a recommendation, not a promise that every tunnel will lead straight to a diamond vein.
If frequent lava interruptions are making your route awkward, you can mine a little higher. Moving up trades some deep diamond opportunity for a different working environment; it does not guarantee a lava free tunnel.
How to Check Your Mining Level
In Java Edition, open the debug screen with F3. Some keyboards require Fn + F3. The Y coordinate is the height value: the middle coordinate in the XYZ readout.
For the recommendations here, use your displayed player position while standing in the tunnel. Keep that height consistent as you extend the route.
Ignore old advice that assumes Y=11 is the main diamond level
Minecraft’s world depth and ore distribution changed with Caves & Cliffs. Diamonds still exist above the deepest layers, but older guides recommending Y=11 as the default do not describe the current distribution.
Useful Mining Levels for Every Overworld Ore
These are useful search targets, not complete generation ranges. Terrain, biome and whether the area has already been mined affect what you can actually find.
| Ore | Useful Search Target | Where to Look |
|---|---|---|
| Diamond | Around Y=−59 | Deep deepslate layers, just above bedrock |
| Redstone | Around Y=−59 | Deep underground, often alongside diamond mining |
| Lapis lazuli | Around Y=0 | Underground tunnels and suitable caves |
| Gold | Around Y=−16 | Underground; badlands also offer extra higher gold generation |
| Iron | Around Y=16, or high mountains | Underground mining or exposed ore in tall mountains |
| Copper | Around Y=48 | Especially worth checking in dripstone caves |
| Coal | Around Y=96 and higher terrain | Stone hillsides, mountains and suitable caves above Y=0 |
| Emerald | High mountain and windswept terrain | Requires suitable biomes; ordinary lowland tunnels are a poor target |
Do not take a high altitude recommendation to mean you should mine empty sky. Mountain ores still need terrain for the ore to generate in, so the shape of the landscape matters.
How Ore Generation Works
Ore generation is not spread evenly through the world. Different ores use different height distributions, and some have extra generation rules tied to a biome or geological feature.
Diamond ore has reduced exposure to air during generation. That means you should not judge an entire area only by how many diamonds you can see on the walls of one open cave.
Large iron and copper veins are another feature to watch for. Iron veins can appear mixed with tuff in deep layers, while copper veins can appear mixed with granite higher underground. These are larger formations than a typical small ore cluster.
Ore is generated with the terrain. Mining an existing area does not cause its natural ore to grow back, and a game update does not normally refill old tunnels with new deposits.
Caves or Branch Mining?
| Approach | Why Use It? | The Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Branch mining | A planned route at a chosen level, exposing buried blocks | Requires repeatedly breaking deepslate |
| Exploring deep caves | Quickly surveys a large visible area | Mobs, drops, lava and reduced exposed diamond generation |
| Combining both | Lets you follow useful caves while keeping a dependable tunnel route | Needs clear navigation and enough supplies |
Branch Mining for a Focused Search
Dig a main tunnel at your chosen level and add side branches rather than widening every corridor. A simple two block high tunnel is easy to navigate and exposes fresh blocks as you move.
Space branches so you are revealing new terrain instead of repeatedly inspecting the same walls. There is no special direction or decorative tunnel design that forces a diamond vein to appear.
Branch mining gives you control over the height and route. It does not guarantee a better result every minute than exploring a good cave.
Caving for Visible Ore
Deep caves can still be worth exploring. You can scan a large space quickly, gather other resources and find routes into fresh areas.
Light the route, watch ledges and look above you as well as along the floor. If an ore block hangs over lava, secure the collection area before mining it.
Water filled caves can reveal useful ore too, but breathing time and movement make them a different project. Prepare properly rather than diving after one promising blue block.
A Practical Diamond Mining Routine
- Choose a suitable area that has not already been heavily mined.
- Descend using a controlled staircase or another safe route.
- Check your height and establish a main tunnel around Y=−59.
- Add branches and light your way as you go.
- When you find diamonds, inspect nearby blocks and the area beneath them for lava.
- Use Fortune for diamond drops, or Silk Touch to collect the ore intact.
- Return to store valuables and replace supplies before your pickaxe is close to breaking.
A quiet stretch does not mean the entire area is broken. Generation is random, and a short tunnel is a small sample. Expand into fresh terrain before deciding that a recommended level does not work.
Pickaxes, Fortune and Silk Touch
| Ores | Minimum Suitable Pickaxe |
|---|---|
| Coal, Nether quartz and Nether gold | Wooden |
| Copper, iron and lapis lazuli | Stone |
| Diamond, emerald, redstone and Overworld gold | Iron |
| Ancient debris | Diamond |
A stronger pickaxe tier also works. A gold pickaxe is fast on suitable blocks but does not have the same mining capability as an iron pickaxe, so do not choose a tool by its appearance alone.
Fortune or Silk Touch?
Fortune III can increase the diamonds you receive from diamond ore. It is our choice when the aim is to gather the resource rather than keep the block.
Silk Touch collects the ore block itself. That is useful for storage, decoration or processing later with a Fortune pickaxe. Fortune and Silk Touch cannot normally share the same tool.
For ores such as iron and copper, Fortune improves eligible raw resource drops, which you then smelt. Ancient debris is different: Fortune does not increase its yield.
Efficiency, Unbreaking and Mending make frequent mining more comfortable. Our enchantments guide explains useful combinations for each tool.
Where to Find Nether Ores
| Resource | Practical Search Advice |
|---|---|
| Nether quartz | Look for quartz ore in netherrack, including accessible walls and tunnels |
| Nether gold | Search netherrack for gold flecked ore; it drops nuggets when mined normally |
| Ancient debris | Focus underground around Y=15, using a diamond or netherite pickaxe |
Ancient debris is used to make netherite scrap, rather than being a source of diamonds. It needs its own preparation and processing steps.
See our netherite mining and upgrading guide before planning a dedicated trip.
What to Bring Mining
| Supply | Why Bring It? |
|---|---|
| A suitable pickaxe and spare durability | Essential for collecting the ore you came for |
| Food | Keeps you supplied while mining and recovering health |
| Torches or other light sources | Help secure and follow the route |
| Building blocks | For bridges, barriers and handling awkward openings |
| A water bucket in the Overworld | Useful for controlling some lava situations and navigating |
| Storage space | Prevents useful drops being left behind |
| Recorded coordinates | Help you find your entrance and return route |
Water cannot be placed normally in the Nether, so do not rely on an Overworld water bucket plan there. Take the supplies appropriate to the dimension.
Our food guide and potions guide can help you prepare. Night Vision improves visibility, but it does not light blocks or prevent hostile mobs spawning.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is the Best Level to Find Diamonds?
Around Y=−59 is a practical target for focused mining in current standard Java terrain. Diamonds become more common deeper underground, while bedrock makes the very lowest layers less convenient.
Can I Still Find Diamonds at Y=11?
Yes, but Y=11 is no longer the main recommendation for a dedicated diamond search. Older guides often describe the world before Caves & Cliffs changed the depth and ore distribution.
Does Fortune Make More Diamond Ore Generate?
No. Fortune changes eligible drops when you mine a block. It does not change the terrain or create new diamond ore.
Is Branch Mining Better Than Caving?
Branch mining gives you a controlled route and access to buried blocks at a chosen height. Caving can survey a large visible area quickly. Which is more productive depends on terrain, preparation and what you find.
Which Pickaxe Do I Need for Diamonds?
Use an iron, diamond or netherite pickaxe. Wooden, stone, copper and gold pickaxes do not collect diamond ore successfully.
Why Can I Not Find Coal in Deep Deepslate?
Coal ore does not naturally generate below Y=0 in current standard terrain. Look higher up in stone terrain, hillsides and mountains instead.
Do Diamonds Generate in Every Overworld Biome?
Diamond ore is not restricted to a particular Overworld biome in standard generation. Depth and the surrounding terrain are more useful search factors than choosing a surface biome.
Do Ores Respawn After Mining?
Natural ore does not grow back in mined terrain. Explore fresh areas, or use a server’s designated resource worlds and follow its announced refresh schedule.
